Publishers are trying harder and harder to lock in our purchases as soon as possible with things like early access periods and extra in-game goodies if we commit ahead of launch, but on the flipside, many games in the last few years have released in less-than-ideal states (an understatement in some cases), so it can feel like a risk. So this week, we're asking: How often do you preorder games?Preorder next week's poll now to vote three days early!The preorder market and mentality surrounding it has changed a lot over the years — back before the digital days, preordering a major release was often the only way to secure a copy from a retailer on launch day, so leaving it too late could mean waiting days, weeks, or even months to get hold of a hot new game. Today, with online retail giants having warehouses full of the things and digital storefronts having an unlimited supply, that impetus on reservations isn't there to anything like the same degree, hence why publishers have had to start coming up with creative new ways to get us to part with our cash early. Many of us have likely been stung at least once or twice, going all-in on something that ended up disappointing. But conversely, there are some studios and franchises that we trust to deliver the goods every time so in those cases, it doesn't feel like anywhere near as much of a questionable decision, especially if there are other bonuses on top of simply having the game unlock early. The advent of modern first-party games coming to Game Pass on day one has changed things too, so there are a lot of factors at play.
