Misleading. RE3 reimagining was the worst RE in the series and don't get me started on RE duty 7 or RE6. The original RE2-RE3 are the best in the entire franchise and closest followed by the RE1 remake. Shame we never got any RE2-RE3 remakes. Reimagining is not a remake but a reimagining.

I feel like the state of RE these days is depressing and don't get me started on how awful the live action movies are.

And 1 more thing RE4 was a decent game by itself but it was the start of going far away from it's roots. Sadly what seems to be popular today is games that are kind of dumbed down. Classic RE is the best in the entire franchise and feels like it was catered to the CoD audience that want a quick game.

I will never forget how my friend and I played RE1 as kids and only got to the scene where the zombie turns around before we yelled in terror, while I pulled the plug on the PS1. laugh
I guess that's why her dad kept the game in his office while leaving only games like Spyro out for us kids. The forbidden nature of it made it fun up until the point when we got why he didn't want for us to play it.
Funnily enough, over the years I played all RE games with this friend and we always play every new release together. Can't wait for RE4 Remake, I didn't think the game necessarily needed a remake but I am so exited. I still play the GameCube version at least once a year and just went back to the 360 version last week. A timeless classic for me. The Chainsaw Demo was absolutely amazing already, highly recommended for a glimpse at what's coming on March 24.

Crazy to think that Village sold so little despite 7's success and a return to more 'action' formula. Village dropped by 4 million in sales compared to 7.
Village lacked presentation. There was nothing interesting in the trailers, absolutely nothing. Nothing in the demo either.
Also, how many xbox players thought to themselves "I'll wait for a sale/game pass?"

I'm a massive RE fan, but that's where I'm at with it. I paid ten bucks for re3 remake, why should I have spent 60? I only had to wait a year.
I still haven't bought the RE3 Remake. I played it with a friend on their console though and it felt more like a tech demo or addition to RE2 than a full fletched game worth 50-60. The original RE3 wasn't very long either but it still felt longer than the Remake. I don't know, I still have RE3 on GameCube, maybe I'll compare the two one of these days, it's been over a decade since I played RE3 on GC.

So the top 3 (and 5 out of the top 6) best-selling RE games haven't got anything to do with Zombies or Umbrella (or anything to do with Resident Evil in my eyes).

    I'm very disappointed in gamers.

Resident Evil 5 is actually a good game but not a good Resident Evil game.
I thought the exact same thing when it came out. Outstanding co-op experience. No survival horror. Plus that's when the game plot became so zany and over the top, it lost the B-movie/sci-fi feel of the earlier entries.

Resident Evil 6 does not exist. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Kinda upset at code x being out performed by operation rc. Maybe that's why it didn't get the remake treatment.

I started with RE5 and was blown away by the co-op aspect when I first played it. I hadn't played anything like it before. I would have to say my favorite RE game is RE2 Remake. I'm a little late to the RE4 party but I guess better late then never right? lol

I enjoyed 6 more than 7, lol. I know that's not a common opinion though, at least from the most vocal people. I just found it to be a really fun action horror game. 7 is still really good as of course. I've enjoyed just about every mainline RE game now that I think about it. Most of the side games as well. Not played 8 yet though. Still waiting for that Winter Expansion to be at least half off. It's getting there.

I don't think Rev 1 or 2 are talked about enough, both are those are real good.

So the worst resident evil game has sold the most! Oh my! I guess it was the hype for another resident evil game but that I would not count as a real resident evil game. It made me not getting the 6th one when I heard it was very much the same. But I plan to play that too because I want to finish them all despite two likely being shit.

The best one for me was Resident Evil 7 followed by the first 4.

as much as RE6 gets so much hate, It is one of my favourites, the set pieces were great, Leon and Chris finally meeting face to face was beyond epic for me

Just need Leon and Jill to finally meet and Claire and Jill or all of them.

I did finally start those after avoiding them for a long time. A lot better than I thought they would be and definitely two of the more difficulty RE games in my opinion.

Awesome article! more of this kinda summary please!

Outbreak 1 & 2 were very fun, hopefully Capcom try reviving them in the future. Recently MP just sucked... no matter how many times they would make brand new online versus games, none went well. Afterall RE is a single player experience, better try cooperative next time instead of versus

They're relatively niche titles all things considered, pretty much in the same way horror movies are a niche cinema genre. But they're also some of the best experiences I've ever had. I love the care Capcom puts into this franchise & the regularity of their releases. We always get new RE titles & fortunately they sell well enough to keep the games coming.

Anyway in terms of 'best of the best' list, it has to be:

    1- Resident Evil 4
2- Resident Evil HD Remake (or the original 2002 Gamecube release).
3- Resident Evil 1 (the original first of the first on ps1).
    4- Resident Evil 7
4... everything else, depending on my mood. The rest are all great, good or okay in some areas but they have some flaws as well. Resident Evil 2 Remake for example is too short, ditto RE3 Remake. Village is often a masterpiece (the castle section & especially Donna Beneviento's house are stellar best ever areas), but there's an awful COD section with Chris which destroyed the entire final hour. RE5 was a great game, except for two major flaws: it's too short & Sheva's AI was awful. RE Revelations are perfectly playable & fun but they're also quite forgettable.

In any case I'm just happy we keep on getting RE titles with high production values in a franchise which doesn't need to sell 20 million copies to be sustainable. Looking forward to RE4 Remake now.

Nostalgia (and being an avid SEGA 'Dreamcaster' back in the day) dictates that Code Veronica will always be my favourite Resident Evil - such a shame that more people seemingly haven't played this game. I'd love to see Code Veronica get the full RE:make treatment one day!

I honestly thought the combined total would be a lot higher than 110mil. It just seems really low, considering the sheer amount of titles in the series spread across loads of platforms.

Actually a bit surprised that RE2 remake didnt overcome RE7. But top 2 is no brainer, two best action RE games, after all.
