Xbox Game Studios Spotlight: Compulsion Games

  • Posted on 16 January 22 at 19:57
We Happy Few is Compulsion Games' most recent effort. The roguelike was released in 2018 after two years of early access. The survival-horror had a procedurally generated town with a population riddled with Joy, but not in a good way.
Uhh We Happy Few is NEITHER a roguelike nor a survival-horror lolwarning

Although I initially didn't like We Happy Few, it ended up being one of my favorite xbox one experiences. The world building is fantastic and the aesthetic is one of a kind. They did alot of cool things like a physical release collectors box that includes the bobby mask and some other 60s-inspired trinkets and contracting of actual musicians to create an album for the in-game band: The Make Believes.

Gameplay isn't superb and some achievements are buggy but I would still highly recommend anyone with an XSX (since load times are awful on the OG xbone and hinder the fun) to at least try out the game on a dummy account while it's still on gamepass!

I had absolutely no idea Microsoft bought these guys. Maybe we can start a petition to get them to relist the xbox 360 version of contrast and make it backwards compatible, I want that stack!

This game was one of the few that made me want to upgrade from the 360. Never did though, the 360 is still all I got.

Wenever I see that a game is "procedurally generated" I skip it.

We actually know a lot more about compulsions next game than what you mention in the bio above. A quick internet search will get you this information from Jez Corden at windows central who’s been an incredible accurate source to date:

Recently, we received some details on Compulsion's first outing as part of Xbox Game Studios. Currently codenamed "Midnight," this upcoming title is supposedly a third-person action game set in a dark and fantastical world. Some of the game's early concept artwork can be seen above. They represent the game's protagonist, alongside warped harpy-like humanoids that appear to descend through various iterations of mutation. On the left, we can see what appears to be harpy nest-style dwellings built atop a tree.

Midnight is described as a "coming of age" tale drawing upon inspirations from America's Deep South. The game features magic and large fantastical beasts with a strong "southern gothic" vibe. The game is a wholly single-player experience, with what has been described to me as a "strong" story.
Thanks, I just found it. I missed this at the end of last year. Adding in now!

I liked contrast. I have We Happy Few on my shortlist for next game, but Red Dead has slowed things down. I hope to get to it someday
