We hope you’ve enjoyed blasting your way through level after level of Red Dudes in the October TA Playlist Game of the Month, Superhot, but now that the month is almost over, it’s time to announce the winner of the November poll.

The theme for this month is Solo Developers, games created (primarily) by just one person. While solo-developed games don’t generally have the scope or resources of AAA games put out by large studios, the fact that a single person is driving the project from concept to completion allows for these games to really deliver unique experiences that explore interesting concepts in game design or themes that might not lend themselves to a larger studio title.

The nominees were Axiom Verge by Thomas Happ, Braid by Jonathan Blow, Return of the Obra Dinn by Lucas Pope, and A Short Hike by Adam Robinson-Yu, and while the comments in the forum were pretty evenly split, the votes were not. Winning a landslide victory to become the November 2023 TA Playlist Game of the Month is A Short Hike!

Developed by Canadian indie designer Adam Robinson-Yu and published by Whippoorwill, A Short Hike was released in 2019 for PC, Mac, and Linux, but made the jump to console in 2021, earning accolades as a relaxing and charming adventure game.

Hike, climb, and soar through the peaceful mountainside landscapes of Hawk Peak Provincial Park. Follow the marked trails or explore the backcountry as you make your way to the summit. Along the way, meet other hikers, discover hidden treasures, and take in the world around you.
A Short Hike has a Metacritic score of 88/100 (for the Nintendo Switch version) and a TA community rating of 3.91/5.00 and was the winner of the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the 2020 Independent Games Festival Awards. Just over 16,000 tracked gamers have started their hike up the mountain, with around 4,400 (28%) reaching the summit and unlocking all 12 achievements. There are several collectible achievements, but none are marked as missable, so even though we don’t have a site walkthrough yet, this is still considered a short and easy completion, at just 4-5 hours.

Here’s the full breakdown of the votes. Back in the pre-Game Pass days of the TA Playlist, this poll would have likely been much closer, but whether or not a game is available on the subscription service has become a big factor for voters. We had hoped the status of this month’s other nominees would offset this factor against a lesser-known Game Pass offering, but the results speak for themselves. Braid and Return of the Obra Dinn fought a back-and-forth battle for second place, but as the only Game Pass title in the poll, A Short Hike took an immediate and insurmountable lead, finishing with more than 50% of the total votes cast.

The TA Playlist is a monthly community event. Everyone votes on which of four games to play, and then we all play through it in the following month. There's a dedicated hub to discuss everything about the game, from story beats to gameplay tips – and of course, you can track your achievement progress during the month as well. TA Playlist was created by Mark Delaney and is now run by Miles, Nici and Chewie.
