We’ve had a relaxing month going on A Short Hike, the award-winning game by solo developer Adam Robinson-Yu, but as November draws to a close, it’s time to announce the winner of the December TA Playlist poll.

For the final month of the year, we offered up four of the best new IPs to come to Xbox Game Pass in 2023. No sequels, no remakes, no existing franchises – these were four entirely new properties that came on the scene with a lot of buzz and finished the year with stellar TA user ratings.

The nominees were rhythm-action-platformer Hi-Fi RUSH, turn-based RPG Sea of Stars, open world action-RPG Starfield, and Soulslike Lies of P, each of which delivered new and exciting properties to explore. While three of the games battled it out for second place, one title launched ahead in the polls like a rocket, and never looked back. The winner by just over 200 votes is Starfield!

Starfield, for those who’ve somehow slept through the last several months of gaming news, was a highly-anticipated new release from Bethesda Game Studios, makers of popular open-world RPGs from The Elder Scrolls Series and Fallout Series. Over 10 years in the making, Starfield boasted a whole galaxy’s worth of planets to explore, and it quickly became Bethesda’s biggest launch of all time and shot to the top of our list of Best Xbox Game Pass games.

The year is 2330. Humanity has ventured beyond our solar system, settling new planets and living as a spacefaring people. From humble beginnings as a space miner, you will join Constellation – the last group of space explorers seeking rare artifacts throughout the galaxy – and navigate the vast expanse of the Settled Systems in Bethesda Game Studios’ biggest and most ambitious game.
While Starfield proved very popular for the Xbox community, it received some famously mixed reviews at launch, praised by some critics and panned by others, so we expect that to be a big part of the discussion in this month’s TA Playlist Forums. Still, the TA community has given it a strong rating of 4.35/5.00, and it’s been nominated for Best RPG at the Game Awards. Almost 360,000 tracked TA users have taken their first steps into the Starfield, with just over 6,000 (2%) unlocking all 50 achievements, which is estimated to take 80-100 hours.

Here’s the full breakdown of the votes. We knew going in that Starfield would be a tough one to beat, given that more tracked gamers have played Starfield than the other three games combined, but all three of the other options received some support, and we’ll likely see them again in future TA Playlist polls:

The TA Playlist is a monthly community event. Everyone votes on which of four games to play, and then we all play through it in the following month. There's a dedicated hub to discuss everything about the game, from story beats to gameplay tips – and of course, you can track your achievement progress during the month as well. TA Playlist was created by Mark Delaney and is now run by Miles, Nici and Chewie.
