Cyberpunk 2077 had a spectacular year in 2023, which saw CD Projekt Red rollout of a huge game-changing update and the Phantom Liberty expansion, the latter of which has now been revealed to have sold more than five million copies.

"Over five million agents have infiltrated Dogtown," the Cyberpunk 2077 X account posted. "Thank you for all your support — and good luck on your mission."

While CD Projekt Red certainly fumbled the launch of its sci-fi RPG in 2020, the years since have seen the developer turn Cyberpunk 2077 into an extraordinary game. All of that work came to a head last September with the rollout of Update 2.0 and the highly praised Phantom Liberty expansion.

Update 2.0 was huge, overhauling many of the game's systems, as well as introducing vehicle combat, car chases, a new capacity system, a new police system, and more. While the update itself was free, the paid Phantom Liberty expansion hammered home the changes with the brand-new Dogtown zone, a masterfully told story featuring Idris Elba, and more — between the two huge updates, it seems a good portion of goodwill has returned to CD Projekt from its fans.

Ian was a big fan of the storytelling and mission variety in our Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty review, and it seems he isn't the only one to have a soft spot for the expansion either, as it was voted as the best DLC of 2023 in our TrueAchievements Game of the Year Awards 2023.
