Star Wars Outlaws is set to be one of Ubisoft's biggest releases when it touches down on Xbox Series X|S in 2024. Developed by The Division studio Massive Entertainment in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars Outlaws will be the "first-ever" Star Wars open-world game, giving players the chance to explore an original story that's set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

After being unveiled in June, Ubisoft has slowly drip-fed us information about Star Wars Outlaws' scoundrel protagonist Kay Vess, the planets we'll explore (of course, Tattooine features), and its open world and space combat gameplay. Here is everything we know so far about the upcoming action-adventure game.

When is Star Wars Outlaws coming out?

Star Wars Outlaws doesn't have a specific release date yet, but as revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment are targeting a 2024 release for the open-world Star Wars game.

Star Wars Outlaws will be available to play on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC when it launches in 2024.

Unfortunately, Star Wars Outlaws is a current-generation exclusive, which means it won't be coming to previous-gen consoles. Sorry, Xbox One players, but you'll have to upgrade if you want to play.

Is Star Wars Outlaws coming to Xbox Game Pass?

Star Wars Outlaws not a 300-hour RPG says Ubisoft

No, Star Wars Outlaws is not coming to Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass at launch.

However, it should join Ubisoft's own gaming subscription service, Ubisoft+. If you do want to play the new game without having to pay full price, it might be worth grabbing a Ubisoft+ membership when Star Wars Outlaws finally does release.

What is the story and setting for Star Wars Outlaws?

star wars outlaws planets

Star Wars Outlaws takes place in the original trilogy era and is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. With the Empire at the height of its reach and the Rebels weakened, various underworld crime syndicates have exploited the situation and risen in power.

The story follows protagonist Kay Vess, a thief with a bounty on her head who, along with her dog-like companion Nix and friendly commando droid ND-5, "attempt one of the greatest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen." Not much else is known about the core story, but we know that Kay will be risking it all so she can stop looking over her shoulder and build a new life.

Kay's story will take her to several different planets and locations — both new and old — across the Star Wars galaxy. Tatooine, Cantonica, Kijimi, and Akiva all feature in Star Wars Outlaws alongside Toshara, an all-new wind-swept moon that Massive Entertainment has collaborated with Lucasfilm Games to create.

What type of game is Star Wars Outlaws?

star wars outlaws

Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world third-person action-adventure game, and we've already seen some gameplay courtesy of Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment.

For the most part, Star Wars Outlaws appears to play like most traditional third-person action-adventure games, with a focus on stealth and cover-based shooting. As far as we know at this early stage, Kay isn't a force user, so expect plenty of blaster-based action instead of lightsaber-focused combat. While Kay does know her way around a blaster, Massive Entertainment has said it's not her primary tool to solve a problem or situation; she can use the help of her trusty dog-like companion Nix, who can also distract guards, activate switches, and help solve puzzles.

Outside of the more contained mission areas that we've seen, you'll be able to hop on a speeder and explore Outlaws' large open locations. In the gameplay walkthrough, we see Kay speeding through the dusty moon of Toshara on a bike while engaging in combat. These aren't the only vehicles you'll be able to pilot, though. Star Wars Outlaws allows you to fly your ship from a planet's surface, out of the atmosphere, and into space. Naturally, you'll be able to engage in dogfights with tie-fighters and explore different systems before jumping into hyperspace.

Star Wars Outlaws also features both a reputation system and a bounty system. According to Massive, Kay's reputation between crime syndicates will play a big role in how she approaches her journey. Who you side with in certain situations and what jobs you take will impact your relationships with certain syndicates, including the Hutts, Pykes, and others.

As for the wanted system, Massive says it is ever-present in Outlaws, and if you are caught or "challenge the Empire" in any way, you're going to get a wanted level, and the Empire will chase after you. At its highest level, you can expect a lot of resistance from the powers that be.

Although Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world game, Massive has said it won't be a "300-hour epic unfinishable RPG" and is quite "manageable." You can expect planets to be roughly the size of two or three zones in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which are still pretty large.

Will Star Wars Outlaws have multiplayer?
