Coming in December as part of Sea of Thieves Season 10, Safer Seas allows players to sail the high seas on their own or with their crew in a private game session, which means you'll no longer have to worry about other crews trying to scuttle your ship and steal your hard-earned treasure — it could even make unlocking some Sea of Thieves achievements much easier.

These new PvE servers will soon be found in Adventure mode under Safer Seas, while the classic experience will be renamed High Seasons. Up to four players can join a Safer Seas server, and you'll be able to engage in nearly everything Sea of Thieves has to offer. Because of the reduced risk, Rare has reduced the payout rate for reputation and gold in the mode to 30% of what it would be in High Seas. Trading Company progression has also been capped at level 40 in Safer Seas, which means you won't be able to become a Pirate Legend, as you have to reach level 50 with three different trading companies. Because you won't be able to hit Pirate Legend status, Athena's Fortune is also unavailable in Safer Seas.

Other key features that do not feature in Safer Seas are Hourglass Faction Battles, the ability to purchase and captain your own ship, sail as part of a guild (more on that in a bit), sail as a Trading Company Emissary, live events such as Gold and Glory, and earn reputation for The Reaper's Bones.

With the launch of Season 10 on October 19, Sea of Thieves is adding Guilds, which brings a new shared progression track to the game. Captains can form their own Guild (and customize it how they wish) by pledging an owned ship. Up to 24 players can join a Guild and use other members' ships, complete with all their cosmetics, and progress Ship Milestones even if the ship's owner isn't online. By doing this, players will help contribute to a shared Guild Reputation system, where new cosmetics can be unlocked.

In November, a new competitive voyage called the Skull of the Siren Song is coming to Sea of Thieves. This voyage will be offered to all players on a server simultaneously, and those who accept it will be given two shared treasure maps that point them to the same chest and key needed to obtain the skull. Players must race across the sea to be the first to grab both the chest and the key and get the skull. It's possible that one crew may have the key while another has the chest, meaning that crews will need to battle each other to get both items. Once the skull, which is a powerful new weapon, is finally in the hands of a crew, you will need to protect it from other players.

Sea of Thieves Season 10 begins on October 19, with Guilds coming on the same date, the new voyage in November, and Safer Seas in December. Rare has also noted that the final installment of The Legend of Monkey Island crossover will arrive on September 28.
