Project Mara devs give a new glimpse of the game's highly realistic apartment setting

By Heidi Nicholas,
It's been a while since we've heard anything about Project Mara, which was announced back at the start of last year. It's an experimental project from Ninja Theory, the studio behind Hellblade, which aims to recreate "the horrors of the mind." Now, a new episode of the Dreadnought Diaries Episode 3 gives us a look at the game and shows the incredible level of detail the team are aiming for as they work to "capture reality."

Project Mara is set inside one real-life apartment, and the art team is working to "recreate this apartment perfectly." If you watch the trailer above, you can see they do just that — the in-engine shots are almost indistinguishable from the real world images. The lighting and perspective have all been replicated beautifully, but it's the level of detail in the background which is most impressive. Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades describes how the team took samples of materials from the apartment, and worked to recreate minuscule details like dirt and individual hairs.

Ninja Theory describes Project Mara as its "most ambitious and realistic game setting ever." Story details are still a little thin on the ground, and the game still looks to be in early stages, although Ninja Theory has said it will "be a real-world and grounded representation of mental terror" and that it aims "to recreate the horrors of the mind as accurately and realistically as possible." Along with its single setting, Project Mara will also have just one character. We'll let you know when Ninja Theory shares any more details on Project Mara or its other upcoming game, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II.
