According to a new report, Ubisoft is targeting an April 2025 launch for its upcoming multiplayer Far Cry game, with an Alpha test potentially arriving sometime in the first half of 2024. It's reportedly a standalone title and will release before the next mainline series entry, Far Cry 7. New details suggest that the game is set in Alaska and will have us scavenging for recourses to craft gear, purchasing perks, and more while trying not to succumb to the permadeath.

As reported by Insider Gaming, the unnamed Far Cry game, codenamed Project Maverick, will see our character travel to Alashnica, a fictional version of Alaska, in the hopes of living a life of complete freedom, but only finds a land of chaos and mistrust. It'll be extraction-based, and in order to survive, we'll need to harvest leather for gear by killing animals, scavenge for weapon parts and ammo, make gadgets with chemicals we find in the environment, and harvest plants to craft medicines.

Alongside the crafted upgrades, there will apparently be a number of perks players can purchase, but Insider Gaming's sources haven't given too many details about the system. It's believed we'll need to complete in-game contracts or challenges to earn currency to purchase the perks.

Maverick will be playable solo or with a squad of teammates and it will feature permadeath mechanics, with only your shared Hideout persisting after death. The Hideout will reportedly act as a safe house where you can store your collected weapons, gear, crafting materials, and the like.

These new details make Maverick sound like it could be similar to the Survival mode found in The Division, which sees 24 players dropped into a frozen New York City in a PvPvE race to the extraction. In Survival, the player character is suffering from Hyperthermia, however, so you're constantly battling the elements, but much like what has been described here, you need to scavenge for gear and can use safehouses to craft your required equipment.

Project Maverick certainly has my attention (it's no secret that I love the Far Cry series) and could serve as a nice change of pace to the mainline games' style. According to a report earlier this year, Project Maverick was initially part of Far Cry 7, but it was decided to separate the two.

Back in August, newly appointed Far Cry director Drew Holmes said that Ubisoft has "big things in store" for the Far Cry franchise.
